Matilda Dress in detail

Carefully considered fabric

We have selected fabric that pays homage to the traditional smocking techniques of Julian's original designs. The fabrics have been chosen for their delicate finishes, comfort and durability.

Thoughtful design details

Created in collaboration with Julian. Our Matilda Dress is inspired by original designs from the 1980s and 1990s. This design combines function and form, with thoughtful design details that put comfort and wearability at it's very core.

AYM x Julian Mary and Me

The story for this collection starts with a treasured family heirloom: an intricately smocked cotton nightdress belonging to Alie’s grandmum.

A chance encounter between Alie and Julian - a fellow designer from Sussex, England who crafted the nightdress in the 1990s - led to them discovering a shared appreciation for the quality of handmade garments. And from that, the AYM x Julian Mary and Me collaboration was born.

This six-piece collection is designed thoughtfully against the backdrop of the quintessential British countryside and is inspired by the beautiful smocking techniques Julian used 30 years ago. “This has felt like a reawakening of a long lost, cherished friendship,”she said.

We hope these designs echoing the traditional craft of English dressmaking spark joy and nostalgia, and become a treasured part of your story. Wouldn’t it be lovely to pass them down through generations in your own family, like the heirloom nightdress in Alie’s.
